Essentially Yours Spring/Summer 2008

Today’s youth are growing up in an age that is saturated
with messages that attack the physical appearance and
psychological being. These messages make ALL our youth ‘At
Risk’ in some way. Statistics show how there is a continue
increase in teen crimes, substance abusers, pregnancies,
obese children, depression and other issues; having to make
youth out to be criminals, non-caring, and having no
particular aspirations for valuing life.

As we at Essential Aesthetics continue to do our work, we
see the need to assist young people in reaching their full
potential. The future of our youth is based on the steps
we take to nourish their lives today. Teaching and
promoting self awareness, respect, identity, empowerment
and self-love go along with our 13 year old mission
‘Bringing Out The Best In You’.

A collaborative effort between Essential Aesthetics, youth
organizations and groups allow youth multiple resources to
reconnect, project their true self, and increase their
chance of becoming positive role models in their community
verses part of an epidemic.

Teen Segment...(cartoon image with 2 children sitting on

child says, 'what do you want to be when you grow up' and
the other child responds, 'Alive')
It takes patience. Dedication. Perseverance. For a few
unique individuals, there’s a special spirit of
determination that can never die. A will to win, no matter
what the odds.
PEACE ON THE STREET IS POSSIBLE

Take the pledge, I did!

My Pledge of Victory Over Violence
*I will value my own life. Recognizing that a lack of self
identity and hope for the future lay at the roots of all
violence, I will reach beyond my limitations, taking
concrete steps each day to uncover my real potential. I
will never give up on my dreams, even if they seem
impossible.
*I will respect all life. Recognizing that violence comes
in many forms, I will not isolate myself but will create an
environment where others feel comfortable and can be
themselves. I will see beyond superficial differences and
reflect on my behavior.
*I will inspire hope in others. With courage, I will
resolutely stand up against violence, be it verbal,
physical or passive and teach others through my own
example. I will support others and encourage them to
follow their dreams.

GENTLEMEN'S CORNER
It’s A Man Thing—Male Menopause
We may joke about men being on their menstrual, but male
menopause is serious. Male menopause is a crucial stage in
a man’s life something every man has to go through at some
stage. For some it can be as serious as a woman’s. The
gradual decline of testosterone from approximately the age
of 50 is something rarely recognized. As men age the
declining in physical activities, stress, poor eating
habits, obesity and general health changes the format of
signals the pituitary gland sends to the testes causing a
decrease in the production of testosterone. This decrease
does not affect just the sex drive. It plays an important
part in circulation, muscles, bones, nerves and brain. As
men age and become less active the spare tire or bulging
girth affects the production of testosterone even more and
what is produced is converted into estrogen. As estrogen
levels rise muscles become weaker, don’t burn as much fat,
compounding the effect. The nervous system also takes a
hammering as emotions become more sensitive. Men can have
their testosterone levels checked by a medical doctor to
assess whether a decline is evident and by how much. There
are a number of creams, gels, etc that can be prescribed.
It is recommended that you ALWAYS see your physician before
embarking on any form of medication. Keeping reasonably fit
and keeping weight down is the most important aspect of a
healthy testosterone level. However with the decrease in
minerals and vitamins in food, it helps to use supplements.

Zinc: Helps to deactivate the conversion of testosterone to
estrogen. There is a balance required when taking zinc for
sexual deficiencies. It is preferable to limit the
ingestion of zinc from the recommended 50 mg 2x a day to 20
mg 3x a day with 4 mg of copper. This balance has proven
more efficient with sexual dysfunction. The prostate uses
more zinc than any other organ in the body.
Vitamin C: Take 1000 mg a day for a couple of months to see
if there is any improvements.
Multivitamin/Mineral: Containing high antioxidant
compounds.
Vegetables: Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels
sprouts have proven to be instrumental in breaking down
estrogen.

Get Younger, More Radiant Skin with
Something Some Throw in The Garbage
Every Morning!
Believe it or not, one of the most effective skin remedies
is something many throw in the garbage every morning! This
little beauty secret not only makes age spots fade
away...it smoothes wrinkles, banishes blemishes,
moisturizes dry skin, and stimulates circulation so your
skin looks silky smooth all the time. But that’s not all.
This powerful anti-ager protects your skin against fine
lines and wrinkles. It contains over 300 naturally
occurring antioxidant compounds. What is more, this little
known beauty item whisks toxins out of your skin. And it
has the same pH balance as your skin, which makes it a
powerful ally for battling acne and other blemishes.

So what is this amazing item?

It’s coffee grounds! That’s right coffee grounds. Coffee
grounds are a natural astringent, antioxidant, detoxifier
and exfoliant all rolled into one. It has been used for
thousands of years to moisturize dry skin, heal cuts and
abrasions faster, and soothe chapped hands and feet.
Coffee grounds contain oils that help moisturize your skin
and hundreds of antioxidants that help protect your skin
against fine lines and wrinkles. When used as a scrub
(exfoliant), coffee grounds help slough off dead skin cells
and stimulate circulation in the skin all the way down to
the cellular level. And coffee grounds are a whole lot
easier on the skin than the harsh and toxic facial scrubs
sold. Coffee grounds can even help smooth away the
appearance of cellulite! Studies show that massaging
coffee grounds constricts blood vessels so skin appears
tighter, firmer and smoother. So the next time you want to
give yourself a real ‘at home spa’ experience, ditch the
expensive and toxic products and save using coffee grounds.
Your skin will thank you.

What You Should Always Do Before You Color Your Hair...by
Dr. Susan Lark
Coloring your hair can make you look great. But it may also
increase your risk of cancer!
The danger first came to light when researchers noticed
that hairdressers had the highest rate of breast cancer of
any profession. This finding led to several studies on the
link between hair dye and cancer.
One study found that women who use hair dye at least once a
month are twice as likely to develop bladder cancer than
those who do not. And women who have regularly used hair
dye for at least 15 years have triple the risk!
Another study compared 459 people who had bladder cancer to
665 people who did not. The study found that women who
used hair dye had a higher rate of bladder cancer. And it
didn’t matter whether the women used permanent,
semi-permanent or rinse. All 3 types raised cancer risk.
Still another study found that a woman’s risk of bladder
cancer depends on how well her body excretes arylamine, a
chemical found in permanent hair dye.
Why would putting chemicals in your hair cause bladder
cancer? Because these chemicals penetrate the skin on your
scalp and enter your bloodstream. The blood is then
filtered by the kidneys and works its way into the urine in
your bladder. Since the lining of the bladder is very
sensitive, exposure to the chemicals leads to cell damage
that develops into cancer.
Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect
yourself. First of all, make sure you drink plenty of
water before, during, and after getting your hair colored.
This will keep urine moving through your bladder, reducing
your exposure to carcinogens. A study found that people
who drink ten or more glasses of water a day have almost
half the risk of bladder cancer as people who drink less
than five glasses. Secondly, and most importantly, you
should keep your exposure to chemical dyes to a bare
minimum. Two options include foiling and highlights as
less dye touches your scalp. But even better option is to
use natural, plant-based hair dyes.
If you’ve tried natural dyes like henna and be dissatisfied
with the color, I have great news for you: Aveda makes a
terrific hair dye that’s 97% plant based. You can get it
at most health food stores, and you can use it even if you
get your hair colored at a salon. Just bring the dye with
you and have your stylist apply it.
What if you’ve already been using chemical hair dye for
years? Then I recommend that you detox your body with
supplements like milk thistle and NAC. You should also
take plenty of cancer-fighting antioxidants, namely vitamin
A, C and bioflavonoids. These antioxidants fight cell
damage and boost the production of collagen in the urinary
tract. They also increase your body’s production of
glutathione, a key player in your body’s detoxification
process.
I recommend that you take 1000-5000 mg per day of vitamin
C, 1000-5000 mg of vitamin A and 700-2000 mg of mixed
bioflavonoids.

What Do You Know About Enzymes? by Shirley Wiggins, CNHP*
We’ve all heard of them, but what do we really know about
them except that we should chew longer because they help to
break down the food in our mouths? First, there are three
types of enzymes.
1. Food enzymes - those that are in the foods we eat,
2. Digestive enzymes – those created by the body to help
digest and absorb the nutrients in our foods, and
3. Metabolic enzymes – those that work in our blood,
tissues and organs for vital everyday bodily functions like
thinking, muscle movement, cell repair . . . everything we
do. No enzymes – no life.
When we cook our foods (over 105 degrees), the enzymes are
all killed off. Cooking our foods makes it difficult for
our bodies to break down and digest as they are lacking in
enzymes. Since the majority of what we eat is cooked,
already we’re missing the first step of an important bodily
need.
When we begin to eat the cooked foods, the digestive
enzymes step in to break those foods down. When our body
realizes it doesn’t have enough enzymes to break down the
foods we’ve eaten because it doesn’t have the assistance of
those enzymes that are missing in our cooked foods, it
calls out for help to get the job done. That’s when the
metabolic enzymes that have other work to do, come to the
aid of the digestive enzymes. Those metabolic enzymes, the
ones that are designed to give us energy to get other stuff
done, have been called from their regular duties to help
out the digestive enzymes. This is when we feel sluggish
after a meal.
Imagine what is taking place in the body when time after
time, enzymes (metabolic) that are supposed to be doing one
job, have to drop what they’re doing and go help the
digestion process elsewhere in the body. The jobs they
normally do in the body are continually neglected. After
rescuing digestion for many years, the body is no longer
able to produce the amount of enzymes needed and we then
begin to experience various health problems. Most
degenerative diseases are promoted or even caused by a lack
of enzymes.
Undigested foods become stored in our bodies as toxins,
leading to all types of diseases. Therefore, we must help
our systems out by taking enzymes. Plant based enzyme
supplements are the most desirable.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE: Water consumption is very
important and necessary in aiding the body with digestion
and, ultimately, its healing by keeping the system fluid
for nutritional transport once the foods have been broken
down. Everyone should be drinking 6-8 glasses of water
daily or ideally, at least ½ of your body weight in ounces.
For example, if you weigh 100 pounds, then you should be
drinking 50 ounces of water daily (not to exceed 100
ounces). Water consumption should be even more if your
lifestyle includes regular exercise.
This article has been broken down in the most simplistic
form to begin to get a point across. However, there are
whole books written on just this one topic. To really
understand the vast importance of the need for enzymes read
“The Enzyme Factor” by Hiromi Shinya, MD or Enzyme
Nutrition, The Food Enzyme Concept by Dr. Edward Howell.
No time to read a book? There’s a booklet out written by
Tonita d’Raye entitled “Food Enzymes”.
I look forward to meeting up with you on your road to a
long, healthy lifestyle.

Ode to Green Smoothie by Victoria Boutenko author of ‘Green
for Life’
What do I mean by green smoothie? Here is one of my
favorite recipes: 4 ripe pears, 1bunch of parsley and 2
cups of water. Blended well. This smoothie looks very
green, but taste like fruit. I enjoy green smoothies so
much that I bought an extra blender and placed it in my
office, so that I could make green smoothies throughout the
day. More than half of all the food I’ve had in last
several months have been green smoothies. I have so much
more energy and clarity that I have removed green juices
from my diet. (Juicing has been something that I’ve been
doing regularly for years.) Green smoothies have numerous
benefits for human health.
Green smoothies are very nutritious. The ratio in them is
optimal for human consumption; about 60% ripe organic fruit
mixed with about 40% organic greens.
Green smoothies are easy to digest. When blended well,
most of the cells in the greens and fruits are ruptured,
making the valuable nutrients easy for the body to
assimilate. Green smoothies literally start to get
absorbed in your mouth.
Green smoothies, as opposed to juices, are a complete food
because they still have fiber. Consuming fiber is
important for our elimination system.
Green smoothies belong to the most palatable dishes for all
humans of all ages. With a ratio of fruits to veggies as
60:40 the fruit taste dominates the flavor, yet at the same
time the greens balance out the sweetness of the fruit,
adding a nice zest to it. People who eat a standard
American diet enjoy the taste of green smoothies. They are
usually quite surprised that something so green could taste
so nice.
A molecule of chlorophyll closely resembles a molecule of
human blood. According to teachings of Dr. Ann Wigmore,
consuming chlorophyll is like receiving a healthy blood
transfusion. Many people do not consume enough greens,
even those who stay on a raw food diet. By drinking two or
three cups of green smoothies daily you will consume enough
greens for the day to nourish your body, and all of the
beneficial nutrients will be well assimilated.
Green smoothies are easy to make, and quick to clean up
after. In contrast, juicing greens is time consuming,
messy and expensive. To prepare a pitcher of green
smoothie takes less than 5 minutes, including cleaning
Green smoothies have proven to be loved by children of all
ages, including babies of six or more months old. Of
course you have to be careful and slowly increase the
amount of smoothies to avoid food allergies.
When consuming your greens in form of green smoothies, you
are greatly reducing the consumption of oils and salt in
your diet.
Regular consumption of green smoothies forms a good habit
of eating greens. After a few weeks of drinking green
smoothies, most people start to crave and enjoy eating more
greens. Eating enough greens is often a problem with many
people especially children.
While fresh is always best, green smoothies will keep in
cool temperatures for up to three days, which can be handy
at work and while traveling. For Green Smoothie recipes:
